Cavus know how to keep themselves busy. They released their debut EP (reviewed here) in 2009, made some gigs with Behexen and (the true) Mayhem, gathering a good amount of positive feedback, and now after a cancelled split record they'll release their debut album "Fester and Putrefy" in the end of August. Someone might care to know that the album features some quest guitars by Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen of Mayhem- and Aura Noir-fame.
The band hasn't seemingly changed that much: they still execute their own brand of bassy and filthy black metal with a touch of extra heaviness and rocking riffs. They have just taken the filthiness further; the snappy but still very organic drums create an oldschool background for the massive bass guitar, topped with a bit heavy but still very dark and harsh guitars and low, growling vocals and shouts that have really improved in variation and impact since the EP - now they really enchance and deepen the atmospheres, and sound highly appealing in their wrath. Riff-wise the song isn't exactly spectacular, or should I say that it's not trying to deny that it's oldschool-based, but the changes from faster and simpler riffing to the very doomy chorus and the mid-part that really grabs you with it's commanding nature is bound to leave a good impression. The same goes for the nicely original and multi-dimensional soundscape: it's is pleasantly filthy and dirty, while still retaining from the dirtiest sludge-like directions and focusing on the more Black Metal-styled harshness, while still carrying some fittingly crude hooks and spices.
This single sure got me expecting the album even more than I did before. I hope that the band explores their sounds' different dimensions further on the full-lenght, meaning all the oldschool black metal elements, the rocking elements in the riffs, the bassiness and the filth. Luckily, it's not long until I can find out what the album sounds like.
