Tibes of Medusa is a young project from U.S.A. and, before this EP, have just taken part on one remix-compilation.
The project mixes the rhythmic elements and the sharp and even harsh sounds of industrial with the softer and darker elements of dark ambient, with the song structures being somewhere between these styles as well. The songs have some repetition and usually some strong beats or quick waving rhythms to give them a good pulse, while otherwise being based on a thin but dense wall of electronic ambience. The overall atmosphere is decent, and the sounds carry a nice amount of mysticism alongside the harshness of the industrial genre.
The problem just is that a mix-up of this kind would still need some more strenght and balance in it to fully function. Now the beat-section is too dominant, which is most clearly audible on the first track and it's harsh programmed beats that overtake the whole soundscape, leaving the electronics almost inaudible for the most part. The track has a good pulse, but it lacks in actual content. On the other end of the spectrum we have moments with almost no rhythm in them, and they don't really sound like much after the heavily beat-oriented parts; the actual electronic sounds in them are good and they create a nice atmosphere, but they just flow past the listener due to their bare nature that lacks in high points. Adding some more force and fleshiness to these parts might do wonders.
The artist released this EP too soon. It features some nice soundscapes and experimentations between the two genres and showcases what the artist is aiming for, but it also shows that he ain't there yet. He clearly has the necessary interest and curiosity to develop his style, but this release seems to present an early version of the songs. More power, more balance, and more cohesion, please.
